Türkiye has stopped attempting to balance its NATO membership against its commitments to Russia. It has, de facto, now thrown in its lot with Eurasia, demonstrated by its August 3, 2023, restructuring of the Turkish Armed Forces leadership.
Türkiye’s new Chief of the General Staff, Gen. Metin Gürak, is the first in the post not to have commanded an arm of the military. Now he, and all the new senior Turkish officers, are identified by the fact that they have not served in NATO posts or undertaken service or studies in a Western country.
